There is an excellent article by Trevor Wright on Salisbury gaols in issue eight (2008) of Sarum Chronicle - The History of Salisbury and its District; ISBN 978-0-946418-77-0. Trevor Wright's article on Salisbury's gaols states that work on this gaol here started in 1818 and was completed in 1822. However this plaque here gives a build date of 1859. It is probable that Wright is correct and this plaque wrong.
This 'new' gaol on this Devizes/Wilton Road site remained in use until 1870 when it closed, following a review which concluded that Salisbury, being at the southernmost tip of Wiltshire, was an inconvenient site for a gaol serving the whole of the Wiltshire county, and that Devizes would be a better location. The gaol did move to Erlestoke near Devizes. Most of the disused ‘new’ gaol was demolished in 1969 to make way for the relief road.
