SALISBURY CIVIC SOCIETY
George Beare
c.1725 - 1749
Portrait Painter
lived in a house on this site.
Some of his portraits
are in the Guildhall
and Museum
On Tuesday 4th December, 2012 Dr Brian Allen unveiled the above Blue Plaque at The Chapel in Milford Street in honour of George Beare. There was a buffet lunch in The Chapel where the guests could see one of George Beare's original portraits, that of Miss Fort of Alderbury (1747). This portrait had been brought by Adrian Green from the Salisbury Museum. There were speeches by a number of people about the life and works of George Beare.
The unveiling photograph here shows from left to right:
recently retired Director of the Paul Mellon Centre for the Study of British Art, Dr Brian Allen;
the Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Salisbury, John Collier;
the Salisbury Civic Society President, Dame Rosemary Spencer DCMG;
the president of Salisbury Rotary Club, Pat Allen;
the owner of The Chapel, Jonty Newberry;
the Salisbury Civic Society chairman, Alastair Clark.
George Beare was a painter of considerable talent who lived for some time in Salisbury. His death was announced in The Salisbury Journal of Monday May 22nd 1749 when he was still a young man.
"Last Week died near Andover, Hants, Mr. Beare,
lately an eminent Face Painter in this City.
Lord George Beauclerk's Regiment of Foot, ordered
for Gibraltar, and now lying here, is ordered to march
to Portsmouth, to embark for that Garrison.
The High German Colossus is arrived here, and will
exhibit this Evening at the New Play House in the
Cheese Market, to begin at Seven o'Clock.
Among other wonderful Performances, he ballances a
large Oak Table on his Forehead; a Two-Story Lad-
der, with a Boy on the Top of it; likewise a Coach
Wheel he ballances on his Forehead, and a Pyramid full
of Glasses on the Top of a Drinking Glass, &c. He
takes up Eight Hundred Weight by main Strength,
performs several Equilibriums as he lays on the Floor,
with a Variety of Dexterity of Hand, and other Par-
ticulars too tedious to mention."
Should the reader come across any further references to George Beare we would welcome such information.
The museum has several of his works out of the fifty or so excellent paintings he produced between 1744 and 1749. One of his portraits hangs in the banqueting hall in the Guildhall. His last known address in Salisbury was a house in Milford Street where The Chapel now stands.
If you are interested in finding out more about this gifted painter, you will find a short biography of him in
The New Dictionary of National Biography.
