William Golding by John S. Eyres (BWS 1938 - 1946)

On one rainy day, he was in charge of afternoon assembly, about quarter past one in the hall. But, as discipline had grown lax on the home front, and many boys were not familiar with the figure of Mr Golding, the assembly remained noisy and unruly for a long time. Obviously, this was no ship's company parading on the quarter-deck! Finally he climbed up on to the stage and positively thundered, "If you don't all pipe down immediately, I will bring back every man-jack of you at half-past four!" and so order was restored.

For my last year at school, 1945-1946, I was one of the Science Sixth-formers in Mr Golding's English class, and I found him to be a very good teacher. For a while, I even learnt how to write blank verse...all those years ago.
